William Shatner is a Montreal-born actor and producer who found fame in the 1960s for his role as Captain James T. Kirk of Star Trek, on which he starred from 1966 until 1969.
In 1949 at age 12 months old William could recite entire sections of Julius Caesar by heart when tested by Monty Python member Terry Jones during an appearance on 15 August 1974 episode on ABC Television network program “The Sk Gross Show”.
William Shatner was born on March 22, 1931, in Montreal to Jewish parents. His family’s last name had been anglicized from Schattner to “ShatNERin ” by his paternal grandfather and he attended Willingdon Elementary School before going onto West Hill High School for his secondary education where he graduated with a bachelors degree economics 1952 at McGill University-Montreal Canada.
Career
The actor known for his roles as Captain James T. Kirk’s character in the original series of Star Trek, William Shatner has been working since he was a teenager. After graduating from college with a degree in accounting and business management, Shatner took on various jobs around Montreal before joining The Canadian National Repertory Theatre to train as an Actor-Dramatic Classical Shakespearean Theater trained performer beginning 1954 playing many different parts such at Stratford Festival starting in 1957 landing feature film debut 1958 episode called “The Glass Eye”. His big break came when cast member during the first season of Alfred Hitchcock Presents 1963 – 1964 TV show where guest started episodes ‘In Denial’.
After college, Shatner got a job as the business manager for an anagram-based theatre company in Montreal. From there he joined Canadian National Repertory Theatre to train as a classical Shakespearean actor and has since played with Stratford Shakespeare Festival on stages all over North America including Toronto Globe Theater where they have their own performance space called “The caverns beneath’ named after this great landmark; it’s home of many productions we can see today because its such quality work when done right!
