Waithe was born on May 17, 1984, in Chicago, Illinois to father Lawrence David Waithe (who died when she was fifteen) and paternal great-grandfather Winston Waithe (who emigrated from Barbados to Boston in 1921). Her paternal great-grandfather, Winston Waithe, also emigrated from sugar plantation slaves in Barbados.
